Police Union to call on Government to install CCTV at regional-based officers’ properties after home invasions

The Police Union is set to call for the State Government to install CCTV at the homes of regional-based staff after three senior officers in the Great Southern region reported home invasions. Ahead of the Police Union’s annual conference on Monday, union members will debate 11 new policy proposals to put to government amid ongoing wage negotiations for officers. One of the key asks is the installation of security cameras and gun safes at police homes in regional WA, to allow officers to go straight to jobs and increase safety for those in small communities. “Throughout the last four years within the Great Southern Policing District, three officers-in-charge have had members of the public attend their private residences with the intention of committing a serious offence,” the Union’s Great Southern branch argued. “Other security incidents have and continue to occur at York, Beverly, Gnowangerup, Nannup and Katanning. “Many officers within (regional WA) have also had similar instances that have gone either unreported or nil incidents have occurred during their interactions. “Currently the only security arrangements approved by GROH (government regional officer housing) are security screens and lighting around the exterior of the property. “These security arrangements only provide a barrier and do not help to identify nor record incidents as they occur.” The branch also argues officers at smaller stations should be allowed to keep equipment at home to allow faster responses including responding to security incidents at their home addresses and police station alarms outside of usual hours. Union members will also vote for a heating and cooling allowance and increase the meal allowance to tax office levels. Starting on Monday, the conference will be the last for president Paul Gale, who lost a re-election bid last month for the top job at the Union.
