Four Upper Great Southern Football League stars were part of a winning WA Country men’s football team that eclipsed Perth Football League by three points in a thrilling contest last Friday night.

Kukerin-Dumbleyung duo Justin Joyce and Nathan Phillips along with Williams’ Simon Panizza and Boddington’s Matthew White pulled on the State colours under lights at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

The inaugural WA Country women’s side made it two wins on the night after prevailing by 25 points earlier on.

Joyce and Panizza were among Country’s best contributors after playing through the middle of the ground in the victory.

White played across half-back, while Phillips was solid across half-forward for the country side.

Three final-term goals ensured the WA country men’s team got home.

Perth Football League kicked three goals in the first term to lead by 11 points at the first change before Country hit back with three goals in the second to take a one-point lead at the main break.

However the tide turned again and Country went into the last term down by 10 points.

Country responded and a goal inside the last four minutes from Brad Holmes handed them a thrilling 8.9 (57) to 8.6 (54) victory.
