Narrogin prepares to host first competitive football game since the turn of the century

For the first time in 25 years soccer will make a competitive return to Narrogin this weekend. The Collie Power Soccer Club and the Albany Rovers Football Club will make the journey to Thomas Hogg Oval on Saturday for a double-header fixture in what organisers hope feeds the passion for the sport in the region. “We know ever since the Narrogin Soccer Club folded in the early 90s there still remains a great interest in the game and this event is a way of bringing it back,” Collie Power striker Mark Tenney said. Tenney, who is a Narrogin local and the deputy principal at St Matthew’s School, will hit the pitch on Saturday in his fourth season for Collie after transferring from Joondalup City Football Club in the State league back in 2016. Spectators and players will get back-to-back soccer action at the free event, with the men’s game scheduled to kick-off at 1pm and the women’s fixture will start at 3pm. The two games will be accompanied by a free junior football clinic for all school-aged students between 9am and noon. Registration for the clinic is still available to children of any skill level who want to get involved in the game. “There will be inflatable pitches and giant balls and all kinds of fun activities for kids,” Tenney said. “We want to bring something to Narrogin that the kids would really enjoy, but we also really want to bring two games to showcase football to the region.” Tenney said nearly 80 children had already registered for the clinic and anyone interested could sign-up at https://www.trybooking.com/BNZHU.
