Narrogin Hawks notch their second win after hanging on in a thriller against Wagin in round five of the Upper Great Southern Football League

Narrogin Hawks moved into the top four on the Upper Great Southern Football League ladder after a thrilling two-point victory over Wagin at Clayton Road Oval on Sunday. Both sides went into the clash with a win apiece, the Bulldogs coming off a confidence-boosting victory over the reigning premiers Boddington last week. The Hawks led by seven points at three-quarter-time before the Bulldogs kicked the only goal of the final term but it wasn’t enough as the home side prevailed in a tight finish, 8.9 (57) to 7.13 (55). Both sides were inaccurate in front of goals in the second half after the Hawks led by nine points at the main break. The visitors outscored the Hawks in the second half 2.8 to 1.7 but they left their run too late as the home side hung on to win a second game of the season and move to fourth place on the standings ahead of a clash with Kukerin-Dumbleyung this Sunday. Mason Hill kicked three goals in the victory while Blair Forrest, Nathan Deblecourt, Dean Blackwell and Perrin Quartermaine were also named in the Hawks best players. The Hawks recruited former South Fremantle player Glenn Byron before the Statewide clearance cut-off window closed and he made an immediate impact, playing a strong hand in his new club’s win. Matthew Marinoni booted three majors in the loss and was well supported by Bulldogs player-coach Paul Duffield and Egan Bradbury, who booted two goals each. Michael Zoiti, Jayden Crawford and Campbell Putland were all important contributors for the Bulldogs.
