More than 100 kids took part in the Upper Great Southern’s Academy Plate event, which was part of the Sunsmart Schools Tennis Classic earlier this month. The SunSmart Schools Tennis Classic is run by Tennis West and School Sport WA and has been held since 1935, with teams participating from across the State. The Classic involves the Slazenger Cup (Years 7-12), Herbert Edwards Cup (Years 7-9) and Academy Plate (Years 3-6) and consists of a series of inter-school events in a bid to qualify for the finals. Narrogin Tennis Club hosted the Upper Great Southern event on March 9 and six schools — St Matthew’s School, Wickepin Primary School, East Narrogin Primary School, Narrogin Primary School, Brookton District High School, and Lake Grace District High School — competed on the day. There were 18 teams playing in four pools and the winner in each pool progressed to the semifinals. Pool A winner St Matthew’s School met pool B winners Brookton DHS, and in the other semi, pool C winners Lake Grace DHS faced off against pool D victors Wickepin PS. Brookton DHS and Wickepin PS clashed in the final and Wickepin emerged as champions. Both the winners and runners-up then travelled to Perth to play in the Academy Plate Country Final at the State Tennis Centre on Friday, March 25.
