A young man who recklessly drove 106km/h on Pinjarra-Williams Road cops fine and licence disqualification

A 23-year-old man who drove recklessly down a residential street during the day, reaching speeds of more than 100km/h has been dealt a fine and had his licence disqualified. Caleb James House appeared in Narrogin Magistrates Court on February 3 on a charge of recklessly driving exceeding the speed limit by 45km/h or more. House, who was self-represented, pleaded guilty to the single charge. He had been travelling west in his Toyota HiLux on Pinjarra-Williams Road, in Williams, on September 27 when police detected him travelling at 106km/h shortly after 10am. The street speed limit is 60km/h. House was stopped and spoken to by police but offered no explanation about why he was driving so fast. Magistrate Rosemarie Myers asked House if he realised he had been travelling at 106km/h at the time, which he responded he did not. House told the court he was on his way to Mandurah but was not in any particular rush and said he was not paying attention. He said he was fully employed as a farmer in Newdegate and could pay a fine. Ms Myers said it was a “significant amount over the limit” but accepted his early guilty plea and youth as a mitigating factor to discount his sentence. House was fined $1400 and must pay $308.80 in costs. His disqualified from driving for six months.
