Katanning Netball Association holds highly successful round of games on new courts in Kojonup

It was a successful return of competitive netball to Kojonup on Saturday, as the town officially opened its new courts.

For many playing on the new courts it was a dream come true and something they have waited more than a decade for.

The Katanning Netball Association and its members showed great support to Kojonup on opening day despite many teams missing players because of COVID.

Teams rallied to gather enough people from near and far to fill the vacant positions and get the games going.

There were unfortunately a few injuries in the senior grades as players adjusted to the cement surface compared with the wooden courts in the Katanning Leisure Centre.

The juniors were again impressive as their game play stepped up and it was great to see the youngsters getting into the team spirit and showing off their skills.

In the seniors, last year’s A-grade premiers Olympians 1 lost most of their team to COVID which put plenty of pressure on them in round four.

Allstars 1 produced a terrific performance, dominating the contest to record a powerful win, 62-14.

Home team Kojonup 1 put up a great fight in the other A-grade match and finished strongly to take a win on their home court, defeating Cardinals Force 37-26 at the final whistle.

In the A-reserve division Kojonup 2 maintained the winning day for their hometown.

Kia Ora kept them on their toes but Kojonup 2 owned the court, prevailing 43-24.

Allstars 2 ran out 48-29 winners against Broomehill.

There were some close games in B-grade as Dumbleyung 1 just edged out Olympians 2, 29-23. Meanwhile Olympians 3 couldn’t quite keep up with Cardinals Fever who notched a 36-17 win.

The Kojonup derby game was quite a show for spectators, but Kojonup 3 were just too much for Kojonup 4, prevailing 31-29.

There was only one C-grade game and it was another derby in a Cardinals face-off.

However it was a one-sided affair as Cardinals Phoenix blitzed Cardinals Vixens, 41-16.
