Peel Cavaliers kick six unanswered goals over Storm to claim successive Great Southern Colts Carnival titles

Peel Cavaliers have claimed back-to-back titles at the long-running Great Southern Colts Carnival, downing the Great Southern Storm yet again in the grand final at Kulin on Sunday. The Storm were blown away in the last half on their way to a second straight grand final loss at the annual carnival, losing by 35 points after not kicking a goal in the second half. The Storm and Cavaliers were the two unbeaten teams on day one, both winning their three qualifying games, and two points separated the pair at quarter-time in the decider. Beau Veldman kicked a wonderful stoppage goal in the first minute of the second quarter to put the Storm ahead but that was the decisive moment in the game as the defending champions went to another gear, kicking six unanswered goals. Cavaliers star Blake Russell and key forward Ashton Lee-Steere converted within a minute to quickly give their side the lead back. Trailing by nine points at half-time, the Storm needed a big second half but it was the Cavaliers who stamped their authority on the contest, capping an unbeaten weekend with a convincing 7.8 (50) to 2.3 (15) triumph. Dominant young ruckman Trent Robertson was a driving force in the Cavaliers’ victory and won the Clem Bray Trophy as best on ground in the grand final. Robinson gave his side a clear advantage in the ruck, with the likes of Russell and Jayden Mitchell feasting on the service around the ground. Daniel Cooper booted two goals, while Saul McCann (one goal) and Tayne Woods were also influential for the Cavaliers. Ajay Moseley kicked the only goal of the third term as the Storm began to lose their way and suffered a couple of untimely injuries. The Cavaliers led by 17 points at the last change before Cooper slotted his second, McCann converted from a free kick, and then Mitchell sealed the title with five minutes to play. It was nearly a scoreless half for the Storm, with a Ben Michael behind in the dying seconds their only score in the final 30 minutes. Jared Ballard worked hard throughout for the Storm, well supported by midfields Jesse Owens and Bailin Curtis, while Hayden Leo and Max Grimes were kept busy in defence. Clay Harrington kicked the first goal of the game when hit up well by Milan Jaggi, before going back to strike it perfectly from a tight angle nearing quarter-time. But like they did throughout the contest, the Cavaliers had the answers as Cooper got an immediate reply. The Cavaliers progressed to the grand final after a narrow four-point win over an impressive Eastern Districts outfit on Saturday and then downing Upper Great Southern by 35 points before a 40-point win over Goldfields. The Storm had an easier path to the decider with a 61-point win over Ongerup before defeating Lower South West by 50 points and thumping Esperance by 81 points.
