An electrical business based in Robinson has been named the best small sparky company in the country.

Fleers Electrical started fulltime operations in January 2025, and this year managed to lock down the best small electrical business gong at the 2026 Australian Trades Small Business Champion Awards.

Owner Peter Fleers said the move to full-time electrical work was a long time in the making for him — and one he was happy to see paying off.

“I’ve been a contractor for ages, but only worked on the weekends,” he said.

“I grew up with my dad being an electrician, but then I’d always had another job.

“So then I finally stepped away in 2025 and hired someone, and it’s just gone nuts since then.”

With the help of electrician Cody Wals, the business has grown to take on two apprentices, with an eye to hiring two more electricians.

Mr Fleers believes it was the fact the business tries to give back to the community that held it high in the eyes of the judging panel.

“We try and do a lot of charity things at Christmas, give away money to anyone who needs it, stuff like that, and to local charities,” he said.

“Recently we’ve donated to Porridge Bikers and Dirt n Dust which do things for mental health. We’ve done secondary education, like for troubled kids, and charities like Albany Food Bank.”

Fleers Electrical was the only WA-based company listed among the nine national finalists, and beat businesses from Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.

Held in Sydney on June 27, the awards night involved Australia’s best small trades businesses competing for more than 50 awards.

The Australian Small Business Champion Awards were established in 1999 to recognise the hard efforts of smaller operations throughout the country, with the trades section of the awards launched in 2023.
