Beverley Narrogin Transport Trail: WA could get the nation’s longest continuous walking and cycling loop trail

The ride of your life might be just around the corner — and it starts in the heart of the WA Wheatbelt. A group of five local governments have joined forces in a bold bid to build Australia’s longest continuous walking and cycling loop trail, linking the towns of Beverley, Brookton, Pingelly, Cuballing, Narrogin and Popanyinning via a 105km off-road path. They have big ambitions that the Beverley to Narrogin Transport Trail can eventually connect with the Munda Biddi Trail and Bibbulmun Track to complete an 800km loop through some of WA’s most charming and underexplored country. WestCycle executive officer Wayne Bradshaw is calling it a “game changer” for WA adventure tourism — and he’s not exaggerating. “The proposed Beverley to Narrogin Transport Trail is a great opportunity for the Wheatbelt and how we connect communities, celebrate heritage, and promote sustainable tourism,” Mr Bradshaw said. “This trail will offer fantastic regional riding and walking experiences, with over 100km of safe, off-road trail through some of the state’s most picturesque and historically rich landscapes. “Like the Busselton to Augusta Wadandi Track expansion, this project would complement existing trail networks such as the Munda Biddi Trail and the Bibbulmun Track, forming what could be the longest continuous trail loop in Australia. “That’s a game-changer for adventure tourism and a major drawcard for domestic and international visitors alike.” The trail is still in the planning phase, but local momentum is building fast. The five shires have jointly appointed consultants to explore route options, construction specs and cost estimates, with a preferred alignment along the railway reserve or Great Southern Highway — ideal for keeping users separated from traffic. But engineering such a route isn’t without its hurdles, and alternative alignments are also being scoped — including a scenic backroads path dotted with heritage landmarks and sweeping through the Dryandra Woodland National Park. It would also need another proposed trail — separately under consideration by the Shire of Williams between Narrogin and Williams — to go ahead. “From a bike riding perspective, the trail offers a low-impact, inclusive space for riders of all ages and abilities,” he said. “Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a family looking for a weekend ride, this trail will provide a safe and scenic route that shows off the Wheatbelt.” Shire of Narrogin community and economic development coordinator Regina Razumovskaya said the trail would do more than just put boots and bikes on the ground — it could energise the region’s economy. “This project is not only about creating a valuable recreational space for our local communities, it’s also about enhancing our region’s appeal as a tourism destination,” she said. “The trail will become a significant tourism product in its own right, drawing more visitors to the area and supporting local businesses along the route.” Before any gravel is laid, locals are being invited to shape the plan, with community consultation sessions running this month. It’s early days — and there’s still plenty to plan — but this cross-region collaboration is already turning heads.
