Cuballing notched a massive 117-run win over Towns at Clayton Road Oval in round 11 of the 2023-24 Upper Great Southern Cricket Association A-grade competition on Saturday. Rain brought play to a halt early in the second innings with Towns 6-76 runs at the end of the 31st over in pursuit of 194 to win but the visitors were winners on the Duckworth-Lewis method. After winning the toss and electing to bat Cuballing sent Andrew Harris and Kendal Ballard to the middle to open. The runs were slow to come and Harris left the crease with four to his name after being bowled by Mitchell Ackland in the fifth over. Joe Dowling joined Ballard in the centre and the pair worked hard until Towns captain Perrin Quartermaine caught Ballard (39) off a delivery from Nick Corner to leave Cuballing 2-56. Replacing Ballard was Grady Francis and the runs came slow until he opened up with a six in the 23rd over on the back of two boundaries from workhorse Dowling. Dowling (23) fell in the 27th caught by Quartermaine off a delivery from Scott Fowler and Brock Francis joined his brother in the middle where the pair pushed on. The brothers went their separate ways when Grady Francis was run out by Liam Sweeney in the 40th over after a commanding display to reach 64 runs as Cuballing moved to 4-170. Three deliveries later Sweeney struck again, this time Brock Francis caught out by Russell Cowcher. Tyrone Miller and Rhett Ballard (10) shared the crease until Sweeney claimed Rhett Ballard’s scalp. Miller (10) and and Blair Forrest (three) finished not out to as Cuballing finished with 6-193 from their 45 overs. Best with the ball for Towns was Sweeney who took 2-30 from nine overs, but it was the efforts of Grady Francis (64) and Kendal Ballard (39) that put Cuballing in the box seat. Trouble for Towns started early when play resumed as the wickets of Peter Baker (4), Russell Cowcher (0), Nick Corner (3) and Quartermaine (16) fell in quick succession to leave Towns 4-23 inside 10 overs. The collapse continued with Sweeney departed for six and Lega Tau making 12 runs before being run out by Kendal Ballard and Brock Francis. Lewis Hardie (22) and Scott Fowler (9) were unbeaten for Towns when rain stopped play and they never got back on, with Cuballing well ahead on the Duckworth-Lewis method. Brock Francis claimed 2-11 from eight overs and also took a catch to lead his side to their fourth win of the season. In the other A-grade contest, Williams claimed a decisive win over Lake Grace in Williams. Lake Grace batted first with solid performances from Kalan Joyce (66) and Brayden Reynolds (47) helping them reach 7-173 at the end of 45 overs. Steven Ford was deadly with the ball for the home side, taking 3-23 from seven overs. After the break, Williams captain Rodney Ford (74 not out) and Robert Rose (64) were merciless in pursuit and the home side cruised to a seven-wicket win with seven overs to spare.
