Shire of Wagin and CWA branch planning community garden project

The backyard of the Wagin CWA building could become a community garden where people can grow their own food. The Shire of Wagin has applied for a grant from the Department of Communities to help transform the part of the Trent Street property opposite Wagin’s Foodbank receival point into a community garden. Currently the yard has a few raised beds brimming with winter crops such as rhubarb but Shire of Wagin acting deputy CEO Donna George and Michelle Muller have a grander vision. “If we are successful, we’ll get a concreter in to create footpaths,” Ms George said. “We’ve got a shed but we need to get raised garden beds, potting mix, soil and seedlings.” Ms George said the project followed a discussion with the Wagin CWA in response to the association’s desire to serve the community. “The CWA ladies are all keen on gardening,” she said. “They’ve wanted to do something for a long time so we thought why not this, this can be their baby.” Ms George said the garden would provide Wagin with a park and space where people could grow their own food. “Because of it being quite central, people who are working in town can have their lunch in the garden,” she said. “I also think it’s incredibly important to have these gardens as there are a lot of people out there struggling to afford vegetables.”
