Newdegate’s Trey Westlake ready to represent the bush as Y WA Youth Parliament program candidate for Roe

Hailing from Newdegate, 15-year-old Trey Westlake has been named as one of 59 candidates from around the State who will represent an electorate at the Y WA 2024 Youth Parliament. The four-month-long youth leadership program will see candidates learn about and participate in the democratic process as they draft, debate, and advocate for legislation. Trey will represent Roe — deputy leader of the WA Opposition Peter Rundle’s electorate — and the young regional parliamentarian is keen to have an impact. “Coming from a rural background, I am deeply aware of the unique challenges our rural communities face,” he said. “My primary interest lies in regional and State development. “I am committed to enhancing connectivity through improved road maintenance, boosting educational opportunities for rural students, and increasing funding for these communities, all driven by my desire to enhance the quality of life for people in rural Western Australia.” The program will culminate with candidates participating in a live debate in the chamber at Parliament House in July before submitting Bills to members of the Government and Opposition for review. Bills chosen by program participants in the past have focused on issues including housing availability, education, juvenile justice, and sexual health. Y WA chief executive Dr Tim McDonald said the initiative gave youth a great opportunity to grow and develop. “The Y WA Youth Parliament program, now in its 29th year, offers young people an insight into the workings of government and policy development,” he said. “What makes it so special is that it aims to be truly representative of the views and concerns of the State’s next generation of community leaders.” The young member for Roe is ready to step up to the plate. “I joined the Youth Parliament to gain experience in politics and to represent the voices of young people in Western Australia, especially from regional areas where it can be difficult to raise awareness about local issues,” he said. “Young people face specific challenges and issues. “It is crucial for them to have a voice and to be heard as they offer unique perspectives that might otherwise be overlooked.”
