Man fined over drunken Melbourne Cup Day pants-down antics in Kulin

A man has been fined after pulling his pants down twice in public while intoxicated on Melbourne Cup Day in the Wheatbelt town of Kulin last year. Kyle James Mellows, 27, pleaded guilty in Narrogin Magistrates Court on February 20 to one charge of disorderly behaviour in public and one charge of failing to leave licensed premises. Police prosecutor Sergeant Phil Milne said Mellows was drinking at the Kulin Community Hub with a group of shearers about 6.20pm on November 7, 2023, when he pulled his pants down to his ankles in full view of female patrons in the beer garden. Mellows then went inside and repeated the act in the main bar before leaving. The court was told Mellows returned to the venue around 7.30pm later that night and continued to annoy patrons. Mellows was asked to leave and had to be escorted out. When police later spoke to Mellows, he claimed to have no memory of the event but expressed remorse. Mellows’ legal representative said a big win on the Melbourne Cup earlier in the day led to his client becoming intoxicated. Mellows was described as remorseful and working hard to reduce his alcohol intake after the incident. “This just demonstrates the incredibly silly things that can happen when you become intoxicated,” magistrate Erin O’Donnell said. Mellows received a global fine of $650 for the two offences and was ordered to pay costs.
