Local boy toasts Cup success

Narrogin’s David Phillips has tasted FHE Cup success, claiming top place in the boys division of the under-16 competition with the School Sport WA side.

Sixteen teams from across the Asia-Pacific region faced off against each other at Perth Hockey Stadium beginning last Thursday before finishing up on Sunday.

Split between two preliminary pools of five, first and second placed teams in each progressed to “Pool C” of the competition.

In Pool C, SSWA knocked off cup favourites Japan 2-0, while also defeating rivals WA Grey 2-0.

Japan finished second overall.

WA White, which included UGSHA players Trent Gumprich and Ben Woodruff, placed sixth in the overall standings.

In “Pool D”, the final round for the bottom six ranked boys side, WA White defeated Southern River 1-0 and WA Regional Boys 2-0, but fell short against Malaysia’s Matador team, 1-4.

Matador were the eventual winners of Pool D, and finished fifth overall.

The WA Regional Boys side, containing locals Eathan Blyth, Quinlan Paice, Josh O’Brien and Ethan Forrest placed last overall in the boys division.

The Regional Girls side also had a strong contingent of UGSHA players.

Charlotte Tinley, Isabelle Kilpatrick, Emma Phillips, Katie Phillips, Aimee Grzinic and Takayla Pense all lined up for the WA Regional Girls side.

Japan won the girls division of the FHE Cup as WA Regional placed last in sixth, only managing a 1-1 draw against WA White.
