Invaluable volunteer: Grant Hansen named 2024 Narrogin citizen of the year with posthumous award

At this year’s Australia Day celebration in Narrogin the highest honour — the 2024 Narrogin citizen of the year — was awarded posthumously to emergency service stalwart Grant Hansen. Shire of Narrogin president Leigh Ballard acknowledged Mr Hansen’s contribution to the community as a volunteer and community leader. “As a first responder with St John Ambulance, Grant’s ability to maintain composure in stressful situations showcased his exceptional professionalism and care for patients,” Mr Ballard said. “Grant seamlessly transitioned between team player and leader, stepping up when needed. “He was an invaluable volunteer with Narrogin Fire and Rescue for nearly 30 years and he was awarded life membership for the brigade last year. “Grant’s impact reached beyond Narrogin.” Mr Hansen’s wife Tanya Hansen and daughter Melinda Hansen accepted the award on his behalf. “On one hand, we wish more than ever that he was here himself to accept this well-deserved award,” Melinda Hansen said. “On the other hand, we’re also extremely proud of him and his achievements and happy for him, seeing the recognition.” Mr Hansen, who died on October 25, 2023, was the driving force behind numerous essential projects including the patient transfer facility at Narrogin airport. “The project took over eight years of hard work and numerous hours to come to fruition,” Melinda Hansen said. “It involved years of negotiation, driving to Northam and Perth, designs, redesigns, change of location — this was willingly done in his own time with Grant’s usual quiet and determined demeanour. “We are extremely proud to say that the patient transfer facility is now officially named the Grant Hansen Hanger in his honour.”
