Hawks keep unbeaten run

Laura GrubisaNarrogin Observer

Narrogin Hawks are the only undefeated league team in the Upper Great Southern Football League after defeating Katanning Wanderers by 10 points, 14.11 (95) to 12.13 (85), at Clayton Road Oval last weekend.

Both teams had recorded a perfect 5-0 start to the season but the Wanderers’ winning run came to an end as inaccurate kicking affected them on the scoreboard.

Both teams came out strongly in the first quarter and Katanning went into the first break with a seven-point lead, but Narrogin had a five-goal second quarter to the Wanderers’ one and the home side had a 15-point lead at half-time.

The Hawks streaked ahead in the third quarter and had a comfortable 37-point lead heading into the final quarter, but Katanning came out firing in the last quarter and kicked four goals, while the Hawks could only muster two points.

Narrogin’s third-quarter effort was enough to get them over the line and they have taken back top spot on the ladder.

The Hawks reserves came close to a come-from-behind win but fell short by five points as the Wanderers won 9.3 (57) to 8.4 (52).

The Narrogin colts side had a 58-point win over Katanning, 12.14 (86) to 4.4 (28), and Katanning Wanderers had an easy win over the Narrogin Hawks’ D-grade side, 7.4 (46) to 1.3 (9).
