Fireys and farmers act quickly to get on top of first serious blaze of the season in Narrogin

Volunteer firefighters from around the district have been praised for their courage and dedication after tackling a serious bushfire in the Shire of Narrogin that burnt around 300 hectares of crop and scrub. The alarm was raised at around midday on Tuesday November 21 after a person on a farm in the area spotted a plume of smoke rising near Marramucking Road, around 12km east of Narrogin. At 1.24pm the Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued a bushfire advice as the blaze took, forcing the closure of Williams-Kondinin Road between Narrogin and Wickepin. Volunteer firefighters from Minigin and Narrogin responded to the scene and fought the blaze alongside farmer response units. At about 10am the following day, the Shire of Narrogin announced that the situation was contained and crews were mopping up. “The Shire wishes to express our sincere gratitude to the volunteer firefighters from the Shire’s volunteer bushfire brigades and the farmer response units from not only our Shire but also the Shires of Cuballing, Wickepin, and Wagin,” Shire of Narrogin CEO Dale Stewart said. “Their swift and effective action, totalling about 50 units, played a crucial role in containing and managing the fire. Their courage and dedication are truly commendable, and we are immensely proud of their service to our community.” Mr Stewart praised all who contributed to the firefighting effort. “I would also like to extend our thanks to the Shire employees and community earthmoving equipment operators who provided invaluable support in creating firebreaks and offering logistical assistance,” he said. “Their co-operation and teamwork were instrumental in preventing the fire from spreading further and threatening lives and properties.” On the day the bushfire was reported, a maximum temperature of 32C was recorded. On the Wednesday the temperature again climbed to 32C as firefighters patrolled the area and worked to strengthen containment lines. By the end of the week, the temperature is expected to rise significantly with a maximum of 37C forecast for Friday followed by a hot weekend. “This incident serves as a timely reminder that bushfire season is upon us and it underscores the importance of remaining vigilant and staying alert to bushfire warnings on ABC Radio and the Emergency WA website,” Mr Stewart said. “We encourage everyone to follow the advice and instructions of the authorities and be prepared for any emergency situation. “Together, we can keep our Shire safe and resilient.”
