Dual-flush: Kulin District High School set to save in more ways than one following waterwise retrofit

Kulin District High School has replaced 40 old taps, toilets and fountains as part of a $14,000 retrofit that will prevent about 730,000 litres of potable water being wasted each year. The upgrades, which include dual-flush toilet systems and swivel and push time flow taps, were installed as part of Water Corporation’s Waterwise Towns Program. “It was quite eye-opening to see just how much water can be saved by switching to more modern, water-efficient systems,” Kulin District High School principal Garry Walker said. “We really appreciate the opportunity to work with Water Corporation and have used this project to show students that by making seemingly small changes to water-use behaviours, we can collectively have a big impact.” The Waterwise Towns Program began in 2013 in an effort to help regional WA residents reduce unnecessary water use and lower bills. In total, 1.7 billion litres of water has been saved so far by the initiative. Water Corporation regional manager Adrian Stewart said the Kulin District High School project provided a great opportunity to show students the importance of being water wise. “It’s the young people of today who’ll be our future water sustainability advocates,” he said. “By making them aware of water’s value to the community we’re ingraining water wise behaviours that hopefully last a lifetime.”
