Dam good news: Shire of Narrogin to receive $75,000 grant to help fund aerodrome stormwater harvesting project

The Shire of Narrogin has been awarded a grant of $75,000 to go towards the construction of a new $100,000 stormwater harvesting dam as part of the WA Government’s Community Water Supplies Partnership Program. Shire of Narrogin president Leigh Ballard said the 5000kL dam to be built at the Narrogin Aerodrome on Clayton Road would provide the region with a significant source of non-potable water for use in fire emergencies. “This project will have a significant impact on our community in multiple ways,” he said. “The additional water supply will play a crucial role in safeguarding our community, protecting our valuable assets and also contribute to the greening of the Narrogin Aerodrome, promoting sustainability and enhancing the environmental appeal of the area. “The use of a solar pump to supply water to two additional water tanks showcases our commitment to renewable energy and responsible resource management.” The Wheatbelt Shire of Narembeen has also received a grant through the initiative that will fund the installation of four water tanks to harvest rainwater from the roof of Narembeen District High School. “These projects are crucial for regional communities so they can secure water for important irrigation activities and also ensure there is a local water supply in emergency scenarios,” WA Minister for Water Simone McGuirk said. “I would like to congratulate the Shires of Narembeen and Narrogin on their successful applications for funding and I look forward to seeing the positive outcomes of the projects.” Ms McGuirk visited Narrogin earlier in the year to officially open the town’s Clayton Oval stormwater harvesting dam. Mr Ballard thanked the State Government for supporting the project and investing in regional development and sustainability initiatives. “This funding will enable us to enhance our infrastructure, strengthen emergency response capabilities and create a greener and more resilient community,” he said. “We would also like to thank the Minister and the Rural Water Planning section of the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation for recognising the importance of this project.”
