Long-serving Tambellup St John WA volunteer Aileen Prout has been inducted as a Member of the Order of St John, receiving one of the organisation’s highest honours at a recent investiture ceremony at Government House.

The appointment recognises outstanding dedication to service, compassion and the humanitarian mission of the Order of St John and is regarded as the highest honour that can be awarded to a St John volunteer or employee.

Ms Prout originally trained and worked as a nurse for a number of years, beginning her healthcare career in Tambellup in 1975 at the nursing post before becoming a volunteer with St John WA.

Having retired from volunteering in 2023, Ms Prout said it was the community aspect she missed most.

“I really enjoyed working with the community and being able to help people in our community as well,” she said.

“I really enjoyed the people, and the fulfilment that what you’ve done is useful.”

While she was involved in performing first aid, her favourite part was being part of the transportation team.

“I did some first aid and assisted with teaching first aid so that was really good,” she said.

“I loved the transport side of it because it was tangible, you got the call, went to the person’s case, helped them and you had to decide what you were going to do and then you transported them to wherever they need to go.”

Ms Prout said she was shocked to have been inducted, but is flattered they thought of her.

“I was a bit flabbergasted,” she said.

“I kind of didn’t know I was getting it, but it is so nice to know that you are remembered especially now that I’m not doing it anymore and its such a good thing.

“I’m honoured to receive it and it reminds you of what you have done.”

Ms Prout said her time volunteering was one she would remember and recommends people to give it a go.

“It was such a good thing to do, and it always gave you a real purpose in life and made you appreciate what you’ve got,” she said.
