Scarborough man charged after alleged hours-long Perth CBD crime spree leaves 62-year-old fighting for life

A 62-year-old man is still fighting for his life at Royal Perth Hospital today following an alleged violent assault in the heart of the Perth CBD on Friday night. Homicide squad detectives have charged a Scarborough man in relation to the alleged attack, which police say was the culmination of a hours long crime spree through the city. The incident unfolded around 11.05pm on Friday when the 37-year-old accused allegedly approached the victim and delivered a powerful punch to the head. The force of the blow caused the older man to stumble and fall onto the pavement, sustaining critical injuries. It is further alleged that while the victim lay incapacitated, the accused stole property from him before fleeing the scene. Investigators believe the attack followed an earlier incident that evening. Police allege that at approximately 8pm, the same man stole property from a 41-year-old victim, including a bank card which he then used to make a purchase. The Scarborough man was apprehended by officers nearby shortly after the assault and has been hit with a string of serious charges. He faces one count each of aggravated grievous bodily harm, aggravated robbery, stealing, and gaining benefit by fraud. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today.
