WA father who forced nine-year-old son to hit mum as he beat her in ‘brutal’ assault jailed

A Perth man is behind bars for beating his partner repeatedly, forcing their nine-year-old son to hit her and labelling their other son a “traitor” for refusing to take part. The 41-year-old monster, whom The West Australian has chosen not to name to protect the woman’s identity, punched and kicked her repeatedly on two occasions in 2020. One of the attacks was “designed to cause maximum terror and humiliation”, District Court Judge Alan Troy said. The first took place in July after the couple had returned to the woman’s Redcliffe home after a day out with their children. They had been arguing during the afternoon and the woman eventually told him to leave, but he refused before pushing her to the ground and attacking her. The assault left the woman battered and bruised. Their two sons, aged nine and 12 at the time, had fled the house but were found shortly afterwards at a nearby Hungry Jack’s by their father, who was worried they would alert police as he had a suspended prison sentence hanging over him. He was arrested for the attack but bailed. And four months later he attacked the woman again, despite being banned from going near her. He turned up at her house with a cask of wine and was turned away, but an hour later he returned and smashed a window to gain entry. Once inside he pushed the woman and told her: “I’m going to hurt you. I’m going to f..k you up tonight.” He then told his eldest son to fetch a rope so he could tie up his mother and ordered the boys to attack their mum. The youngest boy hit his mother gently, and she pretended that it hurt, but the older boy refused to take part. Their callous father called him a “traitor”. He then told the children that they were going to help him kill their mother. The man pinned her down before telling her: “Look at me while I f..k you up. I want to see you look at me while I kill you.” His “brutal” and “sustained” attack only stopped after the woman was somehow able to contact a friend who then called police. In sentencing, Judge Troy said the offending was at the “higher end” of the scale, adding the fact the man was on bail for similar offending showed “an entrenched attitude of disobedience to the law”. Judge Troy jailed the man for five years for the domestic violence offences but he will be eligible for parole after serving three years and seven months.
