The 25,000 customers affected by the mass power outage that hit the Great Southern region on Thursday morning have had their power restored, according to Western Power..

The outage spanned almost 300km along the south coast, with residents in an area from Walpole in the west, Bremer Bay in the east and Kendenup in the north all affected.

Power was lost to the large swathes of the region at 8.51am, with approximately 25,529 customers losing power.

About 13,505 customers across the region had their power restored at 9.51am.

More than 12,020 residents were still without power at 10am.

All power was restored by 1pm.

A Western Power spokesperson said the outage was due to a fault on the busbar, caused by trees affecting the infrastructure.

A busbar is a metallic strip which conducts and distributes power from one place to another.

“Western Power crews and network operations teams have restored power to the remaining homes and businesses in Albany, Denmark and surrounding areas that lost power as a result of trees damaging network infrastructure,” a Western Power spokesperson said.

The City of Albany took to its Facebook page to urge patience to residents affected by outage.

“We understand how disruptive this is for our community, local businesses, and essential services,” the post read.

“In the meantime, please take care on the roads, check in on neighbours who may need support, and follow any advice from emergency services.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding while crews work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.”
