ANA 2023: Reigning premiers Royals Saints face preliminary final to stay alive after shock loss to Bullets

Bullets 1 have produced an inspired comeback to be the first team through to the Albany Netball Association A1 grand final. Defending premiers Royals Saints 1 faced off with Bullets in an exciting preliminary final but the third term proved decisive as the Bullets progressed to the biggest game of the year. Bullets trailed at quarter-time and again at half-time but they were terrific in the third period, reeling in the deficit and then establishing a match-winning lead. The two-goal result was Bullets’ best victory since re-joining the top division in 2021, as they now eye premiership glory on Saturday week. Royals Saints got their noses in front after an absorbing opening term, leading by two goals. That margin became three by the long break as Royals Saints held sway through centre Sophie Loveridge and Nardia Humphries at wing attack. Bullets’ defence was working hard to limit the minor premiers, Claire Holliday and Rachel Adams ensuring their side went into half-time well within striking distance. The third quarter would be the catalyst for Bullets’ memorable victory, as they outscored their rivals 10 goals to four. With Jo Scott and Emily Gadean converting in the goal circle, Bullets took the lead heading into three quarter time. The final term was a cracking contest as both sides challenged for the win but Royals Saints could not overcome the deficit. Bullets’ three-goal buffer was reduced to two but they prevailed in a thrilling finish, 41-39. Lauren Lehmann worked tirelessly at centre for the winners while Gadean and Scott were vital in attack after half-time as Bullets beat Royals Saints for the first time this season. Georgia Edwards and Rebecca Goodliffe were kept busy in defence for Royals Saints while Loveridge and Humphries gave great drive. Humphries was moved to goal shooter in the final term but her team fell short and they will now have to back up in a preliminary final. Royals Saints face an in-form Kangas 1 side in this Saturday’s preliminary final at 1pm. The winner will advance to tackle Bullets in the premiership decider. Kangas have beaten Royals Saints in both their previous encounters this season, most recently a five-goal win in round 12.
