Albany 2026: Albany Motorsport Park approved as temporary overflow accommodation for Lighting the Sound
March is proving to be a popular time to visit Albany, with a surprising venue earmarked as overflow accommodation for visitors late in booking their spot to witness Albany 2026’s record-breaking light show.
The City of Albany announced on Tuesday that Albany Motorsport Park had been approved to provide temporary overflow caravan and RV camping during the run of Kari Kola’s Lighting the Sound.
It comes as caravan parks and accommodation options near capacity for the three weekends of the Finnish light artist’s show.
Earmarked as the biggest outdoor light installation of its kind, the installation will see rays of light projected across 1000ha of the rugged terrain of Torndirrup National Park and Vancouver Peninsula.
The project is expected to be visible from the Albany city centre for four hours across the nine-day total run and is arguably the flagship event on the Albany 2026 calendar.
Lighting the Sound will be the Nordic artist’s Australian debut, having previously lit up the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum and Stonehenge.
The addition of the Drome-based motorsport park as overflow accommodation indicates a positive sign for tourism numbers, says the City of Albany’s executive director of community services Nathan Watson.
“The Lighting the Sound event for Albany 2026 is expected to attract a significant increase in visitors to Albany during March,” he said.
“With traditional accommodation options reaching capacity, the City of Albany has worked with Albany Motorsport Park to provide an approved temporary overflow facility for self-contained caravans and motorhomes.
“This proactive measure is a safe and responsible way to provide for the increase in visitor demand and give as many people as possible the opportunity to visit Albany and enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Accommodation at the park is limited to self-contained vehicles and available from February 26 to March 31 once traditional sites are fully booked.
