For parents flocking to the Sydney Royal Easter Show, pleas for eye-catching showbags from their darling children will no doubt be inevitable.

But as preparations for the annual extravaganza reach their final stages, safety bosses have revealed just what will – and pertinently won’t – be included in the spoils for those who choose to hear those pleas.

NSW Fair Trading inspectors have completed safety checks on the showbags ahead of the spectacle, running the rule over more than 400 bags.

And they have revealed that not everything included in the keepsakes were fit to hit the stalls.

One toy in particular, advertised to be suitable for children under three, was pulled from the bags after being ruled as a potential choking hazard.

The offending toy, which has subsequently been removed from the bags at the trader’s agreement, contained several small parts that could easily be detached – posing a choking hazard to youngsters.

Singled out by inspectors, the purple, squishy alien-type head featured several tentacles with pompoms attached that could easily be taken off and chewed.

Meanwhile, inspectors also identified four cosmetics products that had not been properly labelled, due to missing ingredients.

Traders were able to keep these products included after taking measures to ensure they were labelled correctly.

“Year after year, showbags bring joy to kids and nostalgia to adults,” NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Natasha Mann said.

“We’re pleased to see exhibitors largely taking safety seriously and working closely with our inspectors to resolve issues before showbags reach the public.

“Our inspectors will be maintaining a strong presence throughout the show to ensure every product sold meets mandatory safety and information requirements.”

The Sydney Royal Easter Show runs at the Sydney Olympic Park until Monday, April 13, and is expected to welcome more than 800,000 visitors over 12 days.
