There are people who spend months researching and planning every detail of their next trip . . . and then there are those who prefer to go with the flow and embrace the unknown.

The team at Uniworld Boutique River Cruises is hoping there are plenty of the latter, having recently launched an 11-day Mystery Journey through Europe for 2028.

The only details guests will receive before departure are that they’ll fly into Luxembourg and out of Zurich. Everything in between — the rivers, towns and experiences — will remain firmly under wraps.

For an industry that can sometimes feel increasingly over-planned, I admire the playful approach Uniworld is taking with this one.

And while the Mystery Journey appears to be the headline act of the newly released 2028 program, there are plenty of other itineraries that stand out.

Take the 30-day journey from Amsterdam to Bucharest for instance. The cruise follows the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers through nine countries, linking some of Europe’s great waterways along the way.

Uniworld will also venture further along the lower Danube, with itineraries through Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania that swap some of Europe’s busiest tourist centres for medieval fortresses, emerging wine regions and dramatic landscapes.

Two festive additions are also on the cards for the 2028 season. There’s the Rhone Winter Holiday that will include the Christmas markets of Provence and Lyon, as well as the Moselle Holiday Markets cruise, which will weave between Germany’s intimate riverside villages, with a focus on regional wine and festive traditions.

What’s more, Uniworld will see its fleet grow to 22 ships by 2028, with SS Helen joining the Danube, SS Clara sailing the Rhine and the Mekong Mystique set to expand the cruise line’s presence in South-East Asia.

As mentioned before, I admire the approach Uniworld is taking with its Mystery Journey. In an age of endless travel research and algorithm-driven recommendations, there’s something refreshingly old-fashioned about simply turning up at the airport and adventuring into the unknown.

For that reason alone, I hope the journey is a success for all involved.
