WAFL 2024: Peel coach Adam Read says Thunder’s ability to stand up in crucial moments behind third flag

Peel Thunder coach Adam Read has praised his team’s ability to stand up in crucial moments throughout the final series as the key factor in the club securing its third premiership. The Thunder began September with a qualifying loss to Swan Districts before a late Blair Bell got them over the line in a thrilling first semifinal against Claremont. Read’s side rounded out the season with two strong wins over the Swans and minor premiers East Perth to win their first flag since 2017. “Obviously the Claremont game - everyone will look to that one, but I thought in the crucial moments we were able to execute,” Read told The West Australian. “We got the reps in during the year so when those crucial stages came, we were able to execute.” No more crucial stage in their season came then after half-time of the decider at Optus Stadium on Sunday, with Peel holding an unconvincing nine-point lead. Read conceded he was worried at the main break after his team had struggled to capitalise on the scoreboard for their hard work. “I can’t lie, I was worried. It was a tight game, so you’re only one contest or one centre bounce away from giving them a sniff,” Read said. “I was a little bit worried but to our boys’ credit that third quarter got us going. And to East Perth’s credit, they threw everything at us in that last quarter. “I thought their last quarter was excellent football and we got a few cheap goals at the end to blow it out.” While many will point to the fact the Thunder had 11 Fremantle-listed players in the side, but getting the cohesion with the locals to play as a team is no easy task. Read, who was in his first year as coach, praised his incumbent Geoff Valentine for creating a bond between the Dockers players and the rest of the squad which was crucial to the success. “The past two years the job he’s done in building that (cohesion) and making the transition seamless,” Read said. “We’re such a young team and a lot of the boys are the same age and they enjoy each other’s company. “When you play out on the field in a manner like that there’s plenty of connection built.”
