Anthony Albanese confirms Labor will back Mathias Cormann’s nomination for key OECD position

Labor is throwing its support behind Mathias Cormann’s bid for one of the world’s top economic jobs. Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese last night confirmed to The West Australian that Senator Cormann would have Labor’s backing in his attempt to become secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Mr Albanese said he hoped Senator Cormann could secure the OECD role and it was in our “national interest” to promote Australian expertise in international organisations. However, he said it was “a concern that the Government is losing its most experienced economic and finance minister as Australia faces the worst recession in 100 years”. And Mr Albanese said if Senator Cormann failed to get the role it would be because of Coalition policies. “It’s already clear that if Cormann is unsuccessful it will be because of Scott Morrison’s failures on climate,” Mr Albanese, inset, said. “The OECD has been making clear the opportunity for the world to embrace a renewables-led ‘green recovery’ from COVID while the Morrison Government has been undermining investment in renewables at home and international progress on climate change.” Last year, the OECD criticised Australia’s climate change efforts and said the country would “fall short of its 2030 emissions target without a major effort to move to a low-carbon model”. Senator Cormann’s nomination did not technically need Labor’s support but it would have hurt his negotiations to begin in Paris next month if he did not have it. WA Premier Mark McGowan said he had provided a reference for Senator Cormann to take on the post. “Mr Cormann has a great capacity to be inclusive and to reach across political divides,” he said. “The nature of democratic politics is adversarial but Mr Cormann has a great capacity to remain friendly and professional, and to always focus on achieving outcomes.” Federal Labor deputy leader Richard Marles said this month Labor was going to be the “adults in the room” when it came to deciding whether or not to support the nomination. But internally the party was divided about its support because of previous Labor tilts at international jobs being rejected or overturned by the Coalition. Perhaps the most infamous example of this was in 2016 when Kevin Rudd was snubbed by Malcolm Turnbull and not nominated for the position of secretary-general of the United Nations. Yesterday the retiring Senator Cormann finished his official duties in Parliament. He said he was “very grateful” to the Labor Party for its bi-partisan support “Australia, as a globally focused open trading economy under governments of both persuasions since the early 1980s, has much to contribute to the global economic policy reform agenda as the world seeks to recover from the coronavirus pandemic,” Senator Cormann said. “I will give it my best to justify the faith that has been put into me by the Government and the Opposition.”
