Prime Minister seizes on Liberal Senator’s GST ‘threat’ as proof WA’s fair share at risk under Coalition

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has seized on what he labelled a “threat” by a Liberal senator to cut GST payments to states and territories that don’t fulfil their housing targets, saying it’s proof a Coalition Government would put WA’s fair share at risk. Appearing on ABC’s Insiders on Sunday, opposition homeownership spokesman Andrew Bragg was asked whether the Coalition would dock GST distributions to states and territories that did not work hard enough to increase housing supply. Senator Bragg said the Opposition was yet to announce its supply policy, but the punishments were “under consideration”. “We need to be creative and find a way to hit the States hard where it hurts, otherwise I fear we will drift into a situation where the housing problem will get worse before it gets better,” he said. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who with his Cabinet is currently visiting WA, seized on Senator Bragg’s remark as a “threat” to the State’s fair share of the GST carve-up. “Andrew Bragg has put Australians on notice that he’s coming after the GST and he’s coming after it hard,” Mr Albanese told reporters. “Now we know that WA is at risk ... that means less funds for education and health and infrastructure. “It is their money that people contribute - that was the deal that was done all those years ago - and it makes no sense whatsoever. “This is an example of how irresponsible the Coalition government are and how they don’t represent a credible alternative.” Mr Albanese led the attacks on his opponent despite Mr Dutton previously providing his support for WA’s GST deal. After emerging from the first meeting of his shadow cabinet in Perth in June 2022, Mr Dutton said: “Our position is clear ... we support the current arrangement for WA”. “I’m not going to change that, I’m not proposing policy to change it and we’re not going to support any attempt by Anthony Albanese to rip GST money away from WA,” Mr Dutton added. It came after Senator Michaelia Cash lashed a new attack ad by the Albanese Government claiming the Coalition threatened WA’s GST share, which is underpinned by a 70¢ in the dollar floor. It features key figures from the Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison era outlining Mr Dutton’s opposition to supporting WA’s GST deal when he was a Coalition minister. Senator Cash labelled the ad deceptive, “ridiculous” and “so outrageous as to be laughable”. “This is a truly desperate Prime Minister willing to say anything to curry favour with voters,’’ she said. “Peter Dutton was part of the Cabinet that designed and signed off on the deal, and he has made it very clear that a Coalition Government under his leadership will never change the GST deal for Western Australia.”
