The West’s cartoonist Dean Alston reveals the step-by-step process to drawing his classic cartoons

For The West Australian’s cartoonist Dean Alston, his first step in drawing his daily cartoon is waiting. Sitting in his Newspaper House office, surrounded by touch points and keepsakes from his storied 40-year career as a scribbler for this masthead, Alston gets across the stories of the day and waits for the call for what will be on page one. It’s 4.54pm — and he hasn’t chosen what he’s going to draw. “Some nights, I start at 6pm, and it just depends on what’s happening,” Alston says. “I reckon I’m the fastest cartoonist in Australia. “Other blokes I know work on their cartoon most of the day, they refine it and refine it — but that’s not me.” It’s the process he’s fine-tuned across his career, which is being recognised in a two-part magazine series launching in today’s West, as part of the newspaper’s 190 year celebrations. On Thursday this week, where Alston took The West through his daily drawing, there’s a few things on his mind. An intergenerational report exploring the next 40 years of Australia, a desperate hunt for emergency power sources for Perth ahead of summer, and the death of Russian mercenary Yevgeny Prigozhin. “There’s a couple of stories around and so I’m just waiting to see where they’ll go in the paper, and how they will translate into a cartoon,” he says. On his drafting desk sits three, rough, single, black-lined sketches covering each of the main three stories of the day. Despite the lack of detail on the drafts, each cartoon is fully formed in his head. “As I think and I’m trying to link things, I’m trying to link different things in my head with what fits where, and what can I drag from the past,” he said. He points towards the intergenerational report cartoon: “I suppose, this particular cartoon is going to link now and then. So it’s probably a good fit.” Settling on the cartoon, Alston starts on a new piece of paper — this time in pencil, to add detail, and starting with the people. “I work out their faces. What sort of people they’re gonna be,” he says. “Are they going to be really old, are they going to be middle-aged. What are they going to look like — they evolve as you go. “This is going to have two frames. So I’m going to have a square in the corner, and then a lounge full of people, the family TV in the foreground, child playing on the floor, maybe a dog.” Once finished with pencil, Alston moves onto a black marker over the top. The minor details become defined, as the black lines of text, faces and the background make what was in his head earlier that day clearer. “I’ve got my perspective sorted after doing it for years,” he says. “I don’t have to worry about it.” After an hour, Alston scans his black and white cartoon, and opens Photoshop to begin colouring the image. “You’ve got to be pretty quick, there’s no time to stuff around,” he says as he applies the final splashes of colour. Finally, the cartoon is exported, and sent off to the team to put on the page. His final act as he leaves is to place printed copies on colleagues’ desks. This Saturday’s magazine is the first of two 48-page magazines presented by Roy Hill as part of our celebrations to mark 190 years of The West Australian and to recognise almost 40 years of amazing cartoons by Alston.
