Detectives are on the hunt to locate a person who allegedly attacked a 56-year-old man and left him lying on the ground in a northern Perth suburb.

Police will allege that an “unknown person” seriously assaulted the man in Hocking about 5:30am on Tuesday.

The 56-year-old alleged victim was walking along a footpath linking Vignersons Loop with Wanneroo Road when the attacker “approached from behind and punched the victim to his head and face”.

The man was kicked as he lay helpless on the ground before the offender ran away with his backpack.

Police allege the man suffered injuries to his face and a possible broken leg and was taken to Joondalup Health Campus for treatment.
