Emergency services have taken an elderly man to hospital after a crash on a highway in Rivervale.

St John sent two ambulances to the scene on Great Eastern Highway westbound at Graham Farmer Freeway, where they took a man in his 70s to Royal Perth Hospital.

The crash, reported by Main Roads about 3:01pm, resulted in the closure of the left lane which caused traffic delays in the lead up to peak-hour.

Motorists were urged to drive with caution before the crash was cleared about 3:52pm.

Traffic is still heavy in the area.
