A young boy has been hospitalised and left in a critical condition after he was hit by a car in an inner-city suburb of Adelaide.

The 10-year-old was riding a skateboard when the tragic accident occurred in Stepney on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services responded to reports of a child being hit by a car at the intersection of Mary St and Laura St at about 5.40pm.

Paramedics rushed the boy to the Women's and Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He is in a critical but stable condition.

The 36-year-old female driver of the car was not injured but was “shaken” after the incident, according to SA Police.

Major Crash detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
