The Swayns of Wagin were left devastated last month when their house went up in flames, destroying almost everything they owned.

Judith and three of her daughters, Billie, Bobbie and Katie, were left with little more than the clothes they were wearing.

But their tight-knit town was quick to rally around them, organising a GoFundMe account and fundraising event within hours to help the family get back on their feet.

The Support the Swayns fundraising event was held on Saturday night at Wagin District Club, raising between $15,000 and $20,000, with the final total to be calculated later this week.

That figure was in addition to more than $10,000 raised through the GoFundMe account.

Organisers of the Wagin event were thrilled with the turnout and the money raised.

“We are just so lucky to live in Wagin,” organiser Katelyn Murray said.

“The best thing about our town is how we come together in a time of need. Everyone came out to support the Swayns, which was really good to see.

“They’re just lovely people and they deserve it.”

There was live music, raffles and auctions, with the event running late into the night.

“I think there were a few sore heads the next morning,” Ms Murray said.

Bethany Mulholland, one of Judith daughters, said the community did an amazing job. “The night was just beautiful,” she said.
