Two new doctors join centre
Two new doctors have arrived from the UK and are ready to help at John Parry Medical Centre.
Doctors Brendon Parmar and Rhona Marques arrived in WA three weeks ago after securing positions in Narrogin through Rural Health West.
The married couple said they wanted to move to a regional location in Australia because they could not get the same country experience in the UK. “There’s no remoteness at home, you don’t get the same geography in Britain as you do here,” Dr Parmar said.
“Here we’re looking after patients in the medical centre, hospital, emergency ward, and through all stages of life.”
The appointment of two new doctors at the medical centre means there are now more doctors than rooms. This opens up the access to patients, meaning more people can be seen daily.
Dr Parmar is heavily interested in emergency treatment which is evident from his work in Sierra Leone in 2014 and 2015 when he assisted with Ebola treatment during the outbreak. “It was a disaster within a disaster,” he said.
“Ebola was killing thousands of people and a whole generation were uneducated as everything was shut.
“When I got there nine in 10 patients died and when I left six out of 10 in the centre would survive, so the rate of death was down to 40 per cent.”
Dr Marques did her junior training in London and further training in Yorkshire where she had been working before moving to Narrogin. She has a special interest in mental health and aims to give patients the time they need.
The medical centre sees their appointments as a coup for the community and they aim to keep them busy during their time in Narrogin.
