The Narrogin and Districts Netball Association celebrated its Indigenous players last month, playing the Boorloo NAIDOC Netball Carnival in Perth and the association’s Indigenous round in honour of NAIDOC Week.

The annual Boorloo NAIDOC Carnival brought together Indigenous teams from across WA to play during NAIDOC Week.

NDNA sent three teams, competing in the Net Set Go, under-20s and open division two competitions on July 8.

The day proved a tremendous success, with players proudly representing their families, clubs and community while showcasing the region’s depth of Indigenous talent.

The Net Set Go team enjoyed an outstanding carnival, finishing as runners-up, while the under-20s team secured a well-earned third place against strong opposition.

The open side capped off a memorable day by claiming the championship and bringing home the winners’ trophy.

Wickepin Netball Club’s Isabella Budby was named most valuable player in the open division two grand final after a standout performance.

The strong performances at the carnival carried through to the NDNA Indigenous round, held at the Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre on July 25.

The day began with a warm welcome to country from elder Pop Basil Kickett, who welcomed participants and spectators to Wilman Noongar country and set the tone for a day of competition, respect and community spirit.

NDNA Aboriginal liaison officer Jayiesha Bolton-Ford also addressed the crowd, recognising the invaluable contribution of Indigenous players, volunteers and families to the association.

In the feature A1 game, Cuballing overcame Wickepin 59-43 in a spirited contest.

Defender Taya Olman delivered a standout performance to claim most valuable player honours for Cuballing, while Wickepin’s star shooter Abbey Steere was named best on court for her side.

Cuballing 2 continued the club’s strong form in the A2 division, defeating Waves 61-19.

The ever-consistent Marjorie Ugle was named most valuable for Cuballing, while Waves’ Teagan Jamieson was recognised for her tireless effort and high work rate throughout the match.

Off the court, the celebration of Indigenous culture was equally inspiring.

Thanks to Malachi Bolton, spectators were treated to a moving cultural performance featuring dance and traditional music.

Brave young performers Jaylam Ugle, Daytona Millington, Izaiyah Thorne, Justin Ugle, Stanley May-Loo and Malachi Bolton Jr proudly showcased their culture, while Shane Bolton provided a captivating didgeridoo performance accompanied by Malachi and Francis Bolton on tapping sticks.

The cultural performances were a powerful reminder that the Indigenous round is about much more than netball.

It is an opportunity to celebrate culture, honour community connections, and recognise the contribution of Indigenous people to the association and the wider Narrogin district.
