The arrival of the season’s first lambs has brought much excitement to the students and staff at the WA College of Agriculture — Narrogin with lambing off to a successful start.

The college’s farm manager Stephen Madson gave an insight to preparation for the lambing season.

“It was very dry leading up to the opening rain at the start of last week,” he said.

“Preparation for lambing has been going good. The ewes have been pregnancy scanned and put into main groups of twinning lambs and ewes that are having singles.”

Mr Madson said he was expecting to have a successful season of lamb births.

Approximately 1000 merino ewes and 200 British ewes have been mated,” he said.

“We’ve had at least 10 born last Thursday and close to 20 last JUFriday,

“The students are always keen at lambing times. They check the mobs daily to make sure there are no ewes in trouble and that everything is going well.

“I reckon we’ve had a few early lambs mainly because of the cold weather that’s come through.”
