Coles push for seven day trading in Narrogin

Emma TaylorThe West Australian

Narrogin could be set for seven-day trading, with council to consider a request by Coles to extend retail trading hours until 9pm on weekdays and from 11am-5pm on Sundays and public holidays.

Coles said in a letter to the council extended trading hours would give local businesses the ability to better meet consumer demand and compete more effectively with online retailers, as well as providing consumers in Narrogin with more convenience.

Consumer Protection requires a local government to consult with the community to demonstrate there is general support for a permanent change to Sunday or late-night trading hours.

In a report to the council on Tuesday, Shire of Narrogin officers said Sunday trading could increase retail activity, jobs and tourism, but it could also have a negative impact on sporting, volunteer or social activities.

The Narrogin Chamber of Commerce told the Shire it supported the request due to the opportunity it would give Narrogin to compete with towns such as Katanning.

The Chamber committee said its stance might not represent the views of all of its individual members.

Shire officers recommended that council advertise the extended retail trading hours proposal for a period of 30 days to gauge community opinion.
