The Central Midlands Football league served up two cracking matches over the weekend with both results decided by just two points.

It was a top-of-the-table clash between Cervantes and Moora as it was the Sharks who took an arguably upset win, 11.13 (79) to 12.5 (77).

Cervantes have been clearly the second-best team in the competition all season but had failed to get past Moora on their two previous encounters as the Mavericks came into the clash undefeated.

But it was third time’s a charm as the Tiger Sharks found and extra gear to just outlast the Mavericks.

They started on top and should’ve had a larger advantage, kicking 4.6 in the opening quarter to Moora’s 3.0 to lead by 12.

They managed to maintain that lead into the half before a four-goal-to-two third quarter brought Moora to within two points.

It looked as if the Mavericks would take the win as they hit the lead in the final quarter, but the Tiger Sharks managed to lift in forcing a shootout as both teams scored four goals and Cervantes held on to win by two.

Ruckman Jack Beer was huge around the contest as Lewis Harvey, Tyson Lord, and James Venturini both grabbed two goals for Cervantes. Oliver Macdonald had four for the Mavericks with support from Lachie Gulsford and Kurt Tanner but fell just short.

In the other match, the Jurien Bay Bulldogs fell just short of an epic comeback in a 9.2 (56) 7.16 (58) loss to Lancelin.

Having trailed by 27 points at half-time the last-placed Bulldogs looked consigned to another defeat with only wayward kicking from the Pirates keeping them in touch.

But they kicked three unanswered goals in the third quarter to get inside two goals and launched a final quarter assault to threaten to steal the win.

Lancelin just did enough though kicking 2.4 in the final term to the Bulldogs’ 4.1 to hold on by two points.

It leaves Jurien with just one win from 11 games this season while Lancelin stays adrift in fourth, eight points away from the teams above and below them.

The North Midlands Football league saw the upset of the season as the previously winless Three Springs stunned ladder-leading Mingenew 14.7 (91) 8.11 (59).

Having led by a single point at the half the Bombers gapped the Bulldgos in the third with a four-goal-to-two quarter and then blew them away with four goals to one in the last.

Tyrone Papertalk booted four as the Bombers had six players kick more than one goal in a terrific performance to break their season duck.

Carnamah Perenjori couldn’t capitalise on the result as they suffered their own upset loss at the hands of Dongara.

The Kangaroos were outplayed trailing at every change to go down by 17 points 9.8 (62) to 10.19 (79).

Dongara should have won by more if not for their wastefulness in front of goal but were well led by Jack Stone who kicked four goals.

Coorow Latham had a big win over Morawa with a 15.18 (108) to 9.5 (59) thumping as Matthew Burley Blair Stone had nine goals between them.

The game was over by half-time as the Magpies kicked nine goals to two to lead by 51 points at the main break.

Morawa did win the second quarter by one goal but it mattered little as they were well beaten.

The results still sees Mingenew on top four points clear of Carnamah Perenjori in second while there is a log jam from third to fifth.

Dongara, Coorow Latham and Morawa are all equal on 24 points and with only two rounds left all are in a dogfight to secure a finals spot. Three Springs get on the board for 2022 with four points.
