A mid-20s Busselton couple had the surprise of their life after scoring $50,000 from a Scratch’n’Win top prize.

The Australian-Canadian pair bought the ticket at Crosslands Newsagency in Bunbury before taking it home to scratch off, with the couple left stunned at the result.

Eager to make sure the win was not too good to be true, they rushed off to the nearest newsagency — only to have a rude awakening.

“We’ve recently moved back from a big city in Canada where everything is open 24/7,” one winner said.

“After driving round and round we soon realised that nothing was open and went home.

“We were so excited, we were up all night and went to our nearest store first thing the next morning to check the ticket.”

The couple are keen celebrate with an overseas holiday and going out with friends — where they’ll undoubtedly shout the bill.

The South West has proven lucky in 2026, as Lotterywest spokesperson Zoe Wender said it is the second scratchie win for the region in the young year.

“Alongside this couple, another Western Australian player celebrated a scratchie Top Prize of $50,000 earlier this month thanks to a ticket purchased at Newsxpress Bunbury Forum,” she said.

“There’s been plenty to celebrate in WA’s regions this year, including a Pilbara grandfather who took home a $10 million Powerball prize, and a Geraldton retiree who claimed a $1.6 million Saturday Lotto prize just last week.”

WA punters keen to get a head start in 2026 have a chance to become instant millionaires with Thursday’s $20 million Powerball jackpot.

Tickets are available for purchase in-store and online until 6pm.
