The annual Something Pink event will this year use waxing, a silent auction and games to help raise money for local people living with breast cancer.

Something Pink founder Katrina Tedge told the Kalgoorlie Miner this year’s event would be different, with the traditional head shave to be replaced by live body hair waxing.

Hoping to keep the fundraiser “fresh”, event-goers with the highest bid will be able to pull a wax strip off one of six people — so far — who have put their hand up to help raise funds.

“We’ve got qualified professional beauticians who have just jumped at it and said (they’ll help) to raise money for Something Pink, so it’ll all be done professionally,” she said.

“I think it’s going to be hilarious, given that we have a band, music and sound effects.”

Ms Tedge said the night would still feature a silent auction, games, live entertainment and food as well as a flowing bar and a major raffle.

“People come dressed in something pink, from low-key to really out there,” she said.

“Everyone just gets together and has a really good night, and all funds go to Something Pink.”

Tickets for the July 9 event are available from the Goldfields Women’s Health Care Centre and City News Kalgoorlie.

Making this year’s event even more memorable is a new partnership between the local charity and the Goldfields Women’s Health Care Centre, which will for the first time benefit from the event.

Ms Tedge said a portion of the funds would be allocated to men and women in the Goldfields on a journey with breast cancer, and could be used for travel, accommodation, home care and more.

“We’ve taken on some feedback and realised we need to help some local people and keep it local more,” she said.

“I’m really, really pleased that we’re doing that and keeping some money here to help our local families with someone that’s diagnosed with breast cancer.”

Some of the funds raised will also go to the Breast Cancer Research Centre WA, which Something Pink has been supporting since the local charity’s inception in 2017.

Funds are also raised throughout the year, with a pink VM Drilling rig donating a percentage of the revenue made directly to the not-for-profit.

Despite running the event for several years, Ms Tedge said each year was still exciting for the committee as they worked to get the community together for a night out for a good cause.
