The Goldfields Football League women’s competition has unearthed a new star after Chanelle Halligan’s dynamic forward display guided Mines Rovers to a comfortable victory, 9.8 (62) to 2.1 (13), over Railways on Saturday night.

Halligan, who also lines up in the GFL’s Year 9-10 division and played earlier in the day, turned in one of the great individual displays of the 2022 GFLW campaign by kicking six goals off a half-forward-flank.

Her efforts underpinned an impressive display by the Diorites, who grabbed a second win.

It was a massive turnaround for the blue-and-whites, who were held to a solitary behind in a 66-point loss to Railways in round five.

But with Halligan on song in the return clash up forward, Mines Rovers were in control from the opening bounce and scored a goal just moments after the start.

Mines Rovers coach Pat Casey said the round 10 display was a massive confidence-booster after a rough start to the season.

The side’s previous win was against defending premiers Boulder in round two.

“The girls had worked really hard on the track so it was great to seem them play well,” Casey said.

“It’s been a combination of things — not so much fitness but structures and set-ups around the ball.

“Ball movement and skills have been a focus and that means I pull out the white board and draw a few diagrams every now and then, just so they understand it.

“I try and keep it simple and work on the basics, as far as not giving them too much information at once.

“To the girls’ credit, they’ve been chipping away and trying really, really hard.

“We weren’t quite perfect but we’re building and getting better and better each game.

“Chanelle obviously was the individual highlight with her six goals but it was pretty hard to pick best players.”

For Halligan, it was just her fifth GFLW appearance and the first time she had got among the goals.

The result has injected renewed interest in the expanded four-team competition with Kalgoorlie still leading the way with five wins. But Railways and Mines Rovers are both within a game of second-placed Boulder.

Round 11 will be played on Friday night at Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre when Railways oppose Boulder at 7.45pm.
