Motor-lovers spread joy collecting Christmas gifts for Kalgoorlie-Boulder children with Toy Run

Motorcycle enthusiasts and vintage car revheads had the chance to spread joy across Kalgoorlie-Boulder at the weekend while helping collect Christmas gifts for local children this festive season. The 2023 Toy Run was hosted by the Salvation Army and Mates 4 Mates Goldfields-Esperance on Saturday morning and saw 100 motorcycles and 15 old-style cars loop around the city covered in tinsel and holiday cheer. Salvation Army Majors Craig and Shirley Spooner said the event was a chance for local families to help other families living in their community, especially with the cost of living crunch, this December. “I believe that the Toy Run brings hope to struggling families,” Mrs Spooner said. “A toy or hamper brings love and hope to a family. It also tells the child receiving the toy that his or her community cares. “Perhaps this one simple item can show the struggling person or family that perhaps next year has the possibility of being better.” Mrs Spooner said her team had the “privilege” of helping those who were struggling, but told the Kalgoorlie Miner it could only be done with assistance from others in the community. She thanked their partners — Foodbank, Kalgoorlie Coles SecondBite, Hannan Street Bakery and Goldfields Pastries — for their food generosity throughout 2023. Families who need assistance during the Christmas break can attend the Salvation Army office between 9am and 2pm, Monday to Wednesday to register for a Christmas Cheer hamper and toys. The toys which have been collected will suit local babies and children aged up to 13-years-old, with registrations needed before December 15. Collection of the toys and hampers is between December 18 to 20, by appointment.
