Lots to do on Australia Day

With Australia Day just three days away, it is time to start nailing down your public holiday plans.

There are plenty of events happening across the Goldfields-Esperance region, from pool party fun to best-dressed pub competitions.

KALGOORLIE-BOULDER

Despite the Sunset at the Soundshell event being cancelled because of COVID-19 requirements, there are still events across the city, starting at 7am with the annual Rotary Breakfast at Centennial Park.

To cool down afterwards on the expected 32C day, the Goldfields Oasis Recreation Centre is hosting an inflatable fun day from 11am with a free barbecue lunch and use of the inflatable courses.

From 6pm, the community can make their way to Centennial Park for the citizenship ceremony, Australia Day awards and Walk of Fame presentations, but there will be no fireworks this year.

Many pubs across town will also celebrate, with the Piccadilly Hotel’s event starting at 11am with an Aussie menu, thong-throwing competition, a local DJ and more.

The Criterion Hotel’s event will start at 10am with prizes for the best dressed along with a mullet competition, face painting, and a competition to show off some of the city’s worst tattoos.

With a $20 entrance fee, the Kalgoorlie Hotel’s celebrations will start at noon with live music and a best-dressed competition.

ESPERANCE

Starting the day off on the beach might be an Aussie tradition, but a group of swimmers will take that to the next level at 8am when they set out on a 2.5km swim from the Whale Tail on James Street.

The Rotary Club of Esperance will hold a family fun day from 9am-2pm at Adventureland Park with live local entertainment, market stalls, inflatable waterslides, food trucks, and a citizenship ceremony and Australia Day awards.

LAVERTON

The Shire of Laverton is hosting an Australia Day pool party at the local aquatic centre from 10am-1pm with free entry and brunch.

LEONORA

Australia Day will be celebrated tomorrow in Leonora with a Shire-hosted event at the local aquatic and recreation centre.

There is set to be live music, food trucks, pool inflatables and a photo booth for the whole family to enjoy.

MENZIES

Menzies residents can start the day off as a community at the town’s sporting oval with a 9.30am breakfast hosted by the Shire of Menzies followed by family-friendly games for a fun morning out.

COOLGARDIE

Starting from 9am, the Shire of Coolgardie will be hosting a range of free events. from bouncy castles and a free breakfast at Coolgardie Park to a nugget hunt in the Coolgardie Pool.

The day will include fun for the whole family with a 10.30am Shoot the Hoops competition at the outdoor basketball courts, and a movie night from 6pm at the Coolgardie Community Recreation Centre.

KAMBALDA

A second nugget hunt will take place on Australia Day as those in Kambalda can try their luck at the activity and enjoy a free breakfast, Australia Day awards and Shoot the Hoops competition at the Kambalda Aquatic Facility, followed by an outdoor movie from 7pm at the Town Square in East Kambalda.

NORSEMAN

A free community breakfast will take place at Marks Park from 8.30am with bouncy castles and children’s activities on offer.

There will also be citizenship awards presented at the event and a free lunch from 1pm.
