Kambalda pulled up just short in their bid for the overall brigade honours at last month’s State Junior Volunteer Fire Brigade Championships at North Fremantle.

The nickel town squad amassed 132 points to be the runners-up behind visiting Victorian brigade Melton, who showed the way with 163 points.

Esperance were third with 84 points and the squad’s emerging star, Liam Dutton, was the overall sub-junior champion fireman.

WA’s volunteer fire brigade competition is steeped in history that boasts strong Goldfields links, with each brigade’s competition number coinciding with when they were formed.

Geraldton was No.1, Coolgardie No.2 and Cue No.3, with Leonora and South Kalgoorlie coming in next.
