Mines broke through for a first win of the season in the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association’s men’s A1 competition when John Bates’ hat-trick led a 4-3 triumph against YMHC.

After four defeats and a draw, Mines finally got the points on the board thanks to the brilliance of Bates and Toby Bower, who scored the other goal.

Despite the result, YMHC retained third place a game clear of Mines.

Also in the top men’s division, Chris Connolly and Slayde Coombs had a conversion each to lead CBC’s 2-0 win against Pegasus.

CBC are entrenched in second place with four wins to trail only Norths, who are unbeaten.

Norths’ firepower was on full display in Sunday’s Challenge Cup in a 6-0 rout of CBC.

In the women’s A1 Challenge Cup, CBC edged out Mines 2-1 on the back of a best-on-ground display from Courtney Armstrong.
