Shire of Katanning to face court over illegal land clearing allegations

The Shire of Katanning will front court next month on allegations of illegaly clearing native vegetation.

A Department of Water and Environmental Regulation spokesman said DWER would allege the Shire illegally cleared about 0.5ha of native vegetation on a lot in Moojebing in September 2018.

The Shire allegedly cleared the native vegetation without a permit or an exemption under the Environmental Protection Act 1986 or Environmental Protection Regulations 2004.

The maximum penalty for illegally clearing native vegetation is a $250,000 fine for an individual and $500,000 for a body corporate.

Shire of Katanning representatives will face the Katanning Magistrate’s Court on October 6.
