A local charity is staging an outdoor movie night on Thursday night to raise awareness about homelessness and encourage donations.

While it may seem a bit strange to host an outdoor event in the middle of winter, Salvation Army Geraldton corps officer Natalie Norman says it’s a peek into the lives of the city’s most vulnerable.

“When you are homeless, you don’t have a choice,” she said.

“It’s a bit inconvenient for us, but there are people in our community who experience the rain and cold as part of their everyday life.” She is calling on guests to bring practical donations, including sleeping bags, tents and blankets.

“We are getting double the requests (for these items) than we usually do,” Ms Norman said.

“We are getting people coming in every day, and we need to supplement our own resources at the moment.” As well as their donations, guests should bring a chair and something to keep themselves warm while they enjoy the sausage sizzle and soup provided, and enjoy the movie Journey 2 The Mysterious Island.

The free foreshore event starts at 5.30pm.

National Homelessness Week runs from August 1-7.
